Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Latvia
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after the day you leave Latvia. Since Latvia is in the Schengen zone, this rule applies to your entire stay across all Schengen countries. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Border officers at Riga Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air also check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking, hostel reservation, or invitation letter
Immigration may ask where you are staying for the first few nights. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Latvia with their address and phone number is enough. Have it ready in your hand luggage, not buried in your checked bag.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, bank statement, or credit card showing sufficient means
Latvia requires you to show you can support yourself — roughly €50–€70 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit works. I have never been asked for this at Riga, but officers have the right to check.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Latvia. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline or turned away at the border. Renew before you travel.
Schengen zone rules apply
Latvia is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. A trip to France or Germany uses the same 90-day allowance.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga Airport or land border
You'll go through Schengen border control. Join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation ready. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
2
Present documents if asked
Hand over your passport first. If the officer asks, show your return ticket (phone screenshot is fine) and accommodation booking. Answer questions about your trip purpose and length of stay.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible — it's your proof of legal entry. Keep it safe for your entire stay.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Latvia.
