Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Bhutan
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you leave Bhutan. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bhutan
Immigration officers at Paro Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/train ticket to a neighboring country.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Bhutan requires all tourists to book through a licensed tour operator or have a confirmed hotel reservation. Keep your booking confirmation handy — officers may ask for it at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a credit card with available credit. Immigration rarely checks this for short stays, but budget airlines flying into Paro sometimes ask.Recommended
Bhutan e-Permit
Online registration before arrival
All foreign visitors must register on the Bhutan Tourism e-Permit portal at bhutan.travel/e-permit before arriving. Complete the form with your passport details and flight info — you get a QR code to show at immigration.Register for e-PermitRequired
Visa-free only for 14 days
This visa-free entry is strictly for stays up to 14 days. It cannot be extended. If you plan to stay longer, you must apply for a tourist visa in advance through a Bhutanese tour operator.
No visa fee at the airport
You don't pay anything at immigration. The 14-day visa-free entry is completely free — no forms, no hidden charges.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Paro International Airport
All international flights land at Paro Airport. After disembarking, follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a small, single-room hall. Queue up at the counter for foreign passports.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and 1 blank page), your return/onward ticket (printed or on your phone), and your accommodation booking confirmation. The officer will check everything quickly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 14-day visa-free entry. No fee, no forms. The whole process usually takes 5–10 minutes. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs (usually nothing to declare for personal items). Exit into the arrivals hall where your driver or hotel transfer can meet you.
