Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Brunei. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required, but airlines sometimes enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brunei
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A flight booking out of Brunei within 90 days of arrival satisfies this requirement.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it printed or on your phone avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to around 500 BND (about 350 USD) per day. Immigration almost never checks, but it's a formal requirement.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Brunei immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
No visa, no extension
The 90-day visa-free stay is generous but non-extendable. Mark your departure date on your calendar. Overstaying can lead to fines and future entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Brunei International Airport (BWN)
After landing in Bandar Seri Begawan, follow signs to 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for foreign passport holders. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days — no forms to fill.
2
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer briefly. They might also ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking. The whole process usually takes 2-3 minutes.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's nothing else to declare for normal tourist items. You're free to go.
