Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Belize. Airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Belize
Immigration officers at Belize's Philip Goldson International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Belize doesn't set a fixed minimum, but officers expect to see enough cash or card access for your trip length. A bank statement or credit card with a decent limit works fine.Recommended
Entry stamp check
Always check the date written on your entry stamp before leaving the immigration counter. If it's wrong or unclear, ask the officer to correct it immediately.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Belize requires 6 months of passport validity from your entry date. Airlines may also deny boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement. Check your passport now.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Belize airport or land border
You'll enter through Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City, or at one of the land border crossings from Mexico or Guatemala. At the airport, follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a small hall, usually quick.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and your return/onward ticket. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Have your accommodation address ready.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — if the dates look wrong, ask immediately.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red channel system — if you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, Belgian citizens can enter Belize visa-free for up to 90 days. Just show your passport and a return ticket at immigration.
Up to 90 days per visit. The exact number of days is written on your entry stamp. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension at the Immigration Department in Belmopan or Belize City — but extensions are not guaranteed.
Extensions are possible but not automatic. You must apply before your current stay expires. Visit the Belize Immigration Department (Belmopan or Belize City) with your passport, a completed application form, and a fee (around $50–100 BZD). Approval is at the officer's discretion.
You may be denied entry. Belize requires at least 6 months of passport validity from your date of entry. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before you travel.
Yes, you still need proof of onward travel — a bus ticket to Mexico or Guatemala works. Immigration wants to see that you're leaving Belize within your allowed stay.
No, it's not legally required for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Belize can be high, and insurance covers emergencies, evacuation, and trip cancellations.
Overstaying can result in fines (around $50–100 BZD per month) and possible difficulties re-entering Belize in the future. Always check your entry stamp and apply for an extension if needed.
