Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay in Chile
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Chile. Chile does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for Belgian nationals — as long as the passport covers your travel dates, you are fine. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Chile
Immigration officers at Santiago (SCL) routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready. A bus ticket to Argentina or Peru also counts as onward travel.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend/host with their address and phone number works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Chile does not have a fixed minimum amount, but officers expect to see enough cash, credit cards, or bank statements to cover your stay. A daily budget of roughly $50–$100 USD per person is a safe benchmark. An ATM card with a visible Visa/Mastercard logo helps.Recommended
No visa needed, but have your documents ready
Belgian passport holders get 90 days visa-free. Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds or accommodation, but having a return ticket and first-night booking on your phone makes the process smooth.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If you're close to expiry, renew first.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Santiago (SCL) or any other airport, follow signs to 'Extranjería' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?' 'Where are you staying?' 'What's your purpose?' Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
3
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. You may be asked to scan your luggage through a customs X-ray. Green channel = nothing to declare, Red = goods to declare.
