Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Costa Rica. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Costa Rican immigration, but airlines may check for at least 6 months.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers at San José airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. This applies even if you entered visa-free.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked to show where you're staying for the first few nights. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a host works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Costa Rican immigration can request evidence of sufficient funds. A bank statement or credit card showing at least $100 per day of your stay is a safe benchmark. Have a recent statement accessible.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you go. Airlines may also check this before boarding.
No visa, but don't skip the return ticket
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. A screenshot of your flight or bus booking on your phone is sufficient. Don't risk being questioned without it.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date) and that you have at least one blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) airport
You'll go through immigration at the airport. Join the 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners) queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying). Answer honestly. You'll get a stamp valid for up to 180 days.
3
Exit immigration and collect your luggage
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You may be asked to declare items. Keep your passport handy until you're fully out of the airport.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 180 days per visit. The immigration officer decides the exact number of days at entry — usually they give the full 180. You cannot extend this stay beyond 180 days.
Officially, the tourist stamp is for tourism only. However, many digital nomads work remotely without issues. If you plan to stay long-term, consider Costa Rica's digital nomad visa (rentista visa) which allows you to stay up to one year.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes. You need proof of departure from Costa Rica, whether by air, bus, or boat. A bus ticket or a reservation for a shared shuttle works. If you're driving your own vehicle, you'll need the vehicle's entry permit and proof of exit.
No. As of 2026, there is no mandatory online arrival declaration for Belgian passport holders. You simply fill out the standard immigration card on the plane or at the airport.
No. The tourist stamp cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Costa Rica for at least 72 hours (to a neighboring country) and re-enter to get a new stamp. Overstaying results in fines and possible deportation.
The local currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you'll get change in colones. ATMs are common. Bring some cash for small purchases and tips.
