Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Belgian passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Gambia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Gambian immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Gambia
Immigration officers at Banjul International Airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked to show where you are staying during your visit. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry enough cash or a card to cover your expenses — around $100–$200 USD per day is a safe estimate. Gambia is a cash-heavy economy, so having US dollars or euros in cash is practical for exchanges.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Immigration officers at Banjul Airport check passport validity carefully. If your passport has less than 6 months left from your entry date, you will be refused boarding by the airline or denied entry on arrival. No exceptions.
No visa extension available
Unlike some countries, Gambia does not allow you to extend a visa-free stay. If you need to stay longer than 90 days, you must leave the country and re-enter. Plan accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Banjul International Airport (BJL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Gambian citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket. Have your phone or printed copy ready.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a visa-free entry valid for up to 90 days. No fee is charged. The process takes about 2–5 minutes per person.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a quick walk-through. Declare any items over the duty-free limit (e.g., electronics, large amounts of cash).
