Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, your 90-day visa-free limit applies across all 27 Schengen countries combined, not just Hungary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a signed invitation from your host (with their address) covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Hungary doesn't publish a fixed daily minimum, but having a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly €50–€70 per day of stay avoids any questions. Cash is rarely checked.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. The 90-day visa-free limit applies across all Schengen countries combined, not just Hungary. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you have 60 days left for Hungary and the rest of Schengen.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Budapest Airport (BUD) or other entry point
After landing, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' (even though Belgium is EU, this queue is for all non-Hungarian EU citizens). Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay, then stamp your passport. The process usually takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
2
Prepare documents before reaching the booth
While in line, have your passport open to the photo page, and your return ticket and accommodation confirmation easily accessible on your phone. If asked, state clearly: 'Tourism' or 'Business' and the number of days you're staying.
3
After stamping: proceed to baggage claim
Once stamped, you're officially in Hungary. Collect your luggage and exit through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel unless you have goods to declare. No additional forms or declarations are needed for standard tourist stays.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, that counts toward the 90-day limit. Track your days carefully — overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work, study, or family reunification), you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit at the Hungarian embassy in Belgium before traveling.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a visa or permit), you must register with the local immigration office within 30 days of arrival.
You will be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is calculated from your entry date, not your departure date. If your passport expires 5 months after you land, you're fine — but if it expires 5 months after entry, you're still okay as long as it's valid for the entire stay.
Yes. If you hold a valid Belgian residence permit (even if you're not a Belgian citizen), you can enter Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days. The same rules apply — passport must be valid for 6 months, and you need a return ticket.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. However, it's strongly recommended. If you need medical care, costs can be high. EU citizens can use their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for basic care, but it doesn't cover private hospitals or repatriation. Consider a travel insurance policy that covers medical evacuation.
You may be fined, banned from the Schengen area for up to 5 years, or both. The fine varies but can be several hundred euros. If you realize you've overstayed, contact the local immigration office immediately to regularize your status.
