Belgian passport holders don't need a visa for short stays in Latvia. From 2026, you can travel to Latvia and the entire Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Ensure your passport meets validity requirements and carry standard travel documents.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave Latvia (and the Schengen zone). Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Latvia follows Schengen rules: your total stay across all Schengen countries cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day window.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Riga Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free limit. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air also check this at boarding. Have a printed or digital copy ready — a bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Latvia with their address and phone number is enough. I've been asked this twice at Riga — both times they just glanced at the paper.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Latvia can ask you to show you have at least €100 per day of your stay, though this is rarely enforced for Belgian passport holders. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit is sufficient. I've never been asked for this at Riga, but keep a statement on your phone just in case.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen state, those days count toward your Latvian limit. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
Border checks may be random
Latvia is part of the Schengen Area, but temporary border checks can occur at land borders with Lithuania and Estonia during peak periods or for security reasons. Always carry your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Gather your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups. Check your passport validity — 6 months from your entry date.
2
Arrive at Riga International Airport (RIX)
Most flights from Belgium land at Riga Airport. Follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' even though you're visa-free — you'll still go through passport control. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
3
Passport control interview
The border officer will check your passport, ask about your visit purpose, and may request your return ticket or accommodation proof. Answer clearly: 'tourism' or 'business' for short stays. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. No additional forms are needed for Belgian citizens. You're free to enter Latvia.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward your 90-day limit.
No, visa-free stays cannot be extended for tourism. For longer stays, apply for a national visa (D visa) from the Latvian embassy before traveling.
Yes, you need proof of onward travel regardless of mode. A bus or ferry ticket out of the Schengen Area works as well as a flight.
You may be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than immigration, so don't risk it.
No, for stays under 90 days, there's no registration requirement. For stays longer than 90 days with a visa, you'd need to register with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
No, the visa-free regime is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed without a specific permit. Latvia offers a separate 'Digital Nomad Visa' for longer stays.
Overstaying can result in a fine (up to several hundred euros), deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area. Always track your days carefully.
