Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Immigration officers in Dili check the 6-month validity rule strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Timor-Leste
Airlines at check-in will ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Timor-Leste. Immigration at Presidente Nicolau dos Santos Lobato International Airport also routinely asks for it — have a printed copy or a screenshot ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration officers may ask where you're staying. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers occasionally ask for proof of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD for a short trip — cash in USD is widely accepted in Timor-Leste.Recommended
Visa-free entry is straightforward
Belgian passport holders get 90 days visa-free. Just have your passport (6+ months validity) and onward ticket ready. No visa application, no fee, no waiting.
Overstaying is costly
If you stay beyond 90 days without an extension, you'll face fines and possible deportation. The visa-free period is not extendable, so plan your exit carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Presidente Nicolau dos Santos Lobato International Airport (DIL)
This is the main international gateway in Dili. After landing, follow signs to Immigration. There are usually two queues: one for visa-on-arrival and one for visa-free nationals. Belgian passport holders go straight to the visa-free queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and your return/onward ticket. The officer may ask about your accommodation and purpose of visit. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct. You're now free to stay up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a quick bag scan. You're then in the arrivals hall where taxis and hotel shuttles wait.
