Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Tuvalu. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tuvalu
Immigration officers at Funafuti International Airport always ask for a return or onward ticket. Without one, you will be refused entry and sent back on the next flight.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Tuvalu. Immigration may ask for this at the border, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked place to stay.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient money for your stay
Carry at least 500 AUD in cash or have a credit card with available balance. Immigration officers occasionally ask to see proof you can cover your expenses while in Tuvalu.Recommended
Limited medical facilities
Tuvalu has only one hospital, on Funafuti. For serious medical issues, evacuation to Fiji or New Zealand is necessary. Travel insurance with evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
No ATMs on outer islands
ATMs are only available on Funafuti. If you're visiting the outer islands, bring enough Australian dollars in cash for your entire stay.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Funafuti International Airport
You'll deplane on the tarmac and walk into the small terminal. There's only one international airport in Tuvalu, so you can't get lost.
2
Queue at immigration counter
Join the line at the immigration desk. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Collect your luggage
After clearing immigration, head to the baggage claim area. It's a small airport, so bags come out quickly.
4
Exit and arrange transport
Once you have your bags, walk out of the terminal. Taxis and hotel shuttles are usually waiting. If not, ask at the information desk.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free period is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before travelling or leave and re-enter.
If you're transiting through Funafuti International Airport and not leaving the airport, you generally don't need a visa. But since Tuvalu has very few flights, most transits are same-day and you'll still go through immigration. Check with your airline.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before travelling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
No, there is no official requirement to show proof of funds for Belgian passport holders. However, having a credit card or some cash (Australian dollars) is practical for your stay.
Tuvalu uses the Australian dollar (AUD). Credit cards are accepted at some hotels but cash is king everywhere else. Bring enough AUD for your stay — there are no ATMs on the outer islands.
No mandatory vaccinations for Belgian travellers. But check routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, etc.) and consider hepatitis A and typhoid. No yellow fever vaccination required unless you're arriving from an endemic country.
