What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport expiry date — it must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned entry. Print or save your return ticket and first night's hotel booking. If you're flying into Taoyuan (TPE) or Kaohsiung (KHH), have these ready on your phone or paper.
2
Arrive at Taiwan immigration
At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreigners' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for visa-free entry. Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly — they're usually efficient and polite.
3
Receive entry stamp and 90-day stay
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '90 days' before leaving the counter. You're now free to stay up to 90 days. Extensions are not available for this visa-free entry.
4
Exit Taiwan before day 90
Make sure you leave Taiwan (or Taiwan's territories) before the 90th day. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban. Set a reminder on your phone a week before.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa (like a visitor visa or resident visa) before you travel, or leave and re-enter after a short break. Overstaying even one day can result in a fine of NT$10,000 (about €300) and possible deportation.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. Belgian passports can be renewed at the Belgian Office in Taipei if you're already in Taiwan, but it's better to do it before you go.
Yes, you'll be given a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport. Fill it out with your flight number, passport details, and address in Taiwan. Keep the departure portion — you'll hand it in when you leave.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) or enroll in a course longer than 90 days. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa before arrival.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined NT$10,000 (about €300) for the first 10 days, plus NT$1,000 per extra day. You may also be detained and banned from re-entering Taiwan for a period. Always leave before day 90.
If you're transiting through Taiwan (e.g., flying from Europe to Southeast Asia) and staying airside, you generally do not need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport, you'll need to use the visa-free entry (if eligible) or get a transit visa. Check with your airline for specific rules.
No, it's not a legal requirement for entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Taiwan can be high — a hospital visit for a broken leg could easily cost €500+. Insurance also covers trip cancellation, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation.
