Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Pay $150 USD in cash (exact change preferred) for a single-entry visa valid for 30 days. Have a passport photo ready — the immigration counter has a photo booth if you forget.Check GIS portalRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Ghana. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Kotoka ask for a return or onward ticket before stamping you in. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone — they check this at the visa-on-arrival counter.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a hotel booking confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration may ask for it at the visa-on-arrival counter — a printed copy works best.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccination certificate
International Certificate of Vaccination
Ghana requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for all arriving passengers. You will be asked to show it at passport control — no certificate means you may be vaccinated on arrival or denied entry.Required
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
You must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) to enter Ghana. Without it, you may be vaccinated on arrival at your own cost or denied entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash — USD or Ghanaian cedis. No credit cards, no mobile money. ATMs are available after immigration, but you won't have local currency yet. Bring crisp USD bills.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before your flight
Print or save to your phone: passport info page, return ticket, first-night hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them easily accessible — not buried in your bag.
2
Arrive at Kotoka International Airport (ACC)
After landing in Accra, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There's a dedicated counter for visa-on-arrival applicants. Join the queue and have your documents ready.
3
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), return ticket, and hotel booking. The officer will process your visa and tell you the fee. Pay in cash (USD or GHS). You'll get a receipt.
4
Receive your visa and proceed to passport control
Once the visa sticker is in your passport, go to the passport control line. The officer will stamp you in. You're now legally in Ghana.

Frequently asked questions

The exact fee can change, but expect to pay around $100–$150 USD (or equivalent in Ghanaian cedis). Have cash in USD — it's the most accepted. The fee is paid at the immigration counter after you arrive.
No. The visa on arrival is only available at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. If you're entering by land from Togo or Côte d'Ivoire, you need to apply for a visa at a Ghanaian embassy before you travel.
The standard visa on arrival is usually valid for 30 days. You can extend it once you're in Ghana by visiting the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra. Extensions are not guaranteed and cost extra.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. A return or onward ticket is mandatory. If your plans are flexible, book a refundable ticket or a cheap onward bus/flight to a neighboring country.
Yes. Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving passengers. You'll need to show your yellow card (International Certificate of Vaccination) at immigration. Without it, you may be vaccinated on arrival or denied entry.
Ghana does offer an e-visa system, but it's not mandatory for Bulgarian passport holders. The visa on arrival is simpler and faster. If you prefer to have everything sorted before travel, you can apply for an e-visa through the Ghana Immigration Service website, but it costs more and takes a few days.
Denials are rare for Bulgarian citizens with proper documents. If denied, you'll be placed on the next flight back at your own expense. Common reasons: invalid passport, no return ticket, or criminal record. There's no appeal at the airport.
