Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid on arrival
Your Bulgarian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — track your days carefully.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen zone
Immigration at Budapest Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Border officers ask for this less often than return tickets, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You may need to show you have enough money for your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day depending on accommodation. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Hungary is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined — not just Hungary. Keep track of your days using the Schengen calculator app.
Border officers can ask for proof of funds
While not always required, Hungarian border police can ask to see proof you can support yourself during your stay. Have a bank statement or credit card ready — showing at least 50 EUR per day of stay is a safe bet.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), save your return ticket and first night accommodation confirmation on your phone. Also arrange travel insurance — you can buy one online in 5 minutes.
2
Go through passport control at Budapest Airport or any border
At Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport, join the 'All passports' queue. Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return ticket and accommodation proof. The officer will stamp your passport. The whole thing usually takes 1-2 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then walk through the green 'Nothing to declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. That's it — you're in.

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you overstay, you risk fines and a ban.
No, but you cannot work for a Hungarian employer or provide services to a Hungarian company while on a tourist stay. Remote work for a Bulgarian or non-Hungarian company is generally allowed, but it's a grey area — some border officers may ask about your purpose. Best to say 'tourism' if asked.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Hungarian border police. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you'd need a visa or residence permit — apply at the Hungarian embassy in Bulgaria before you travel.
No, Bulgarian citizens do not need to register with Hungarian authorities for stays under 90 days. Your passport stamp is enough.
You'll be fined (typically around 50-150 EUR depending on the overstay length) and may be banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Don't risk it.
Yes, there are no internal border checks within the Schengen area. You can drive or take a train from Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Croatia without showing your passport. But keep your documents handy — random checks do happen.
