Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Bulgarian passport only needs to be valid for the period you plan to stay in Mongolia — no 6-month rule applies. Airlines at Sofia and transfer hubs may still check for at least 3 months validity, so carry your passport with at least that much runway.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket before stamping you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Mongolia ready — they check this more often than not.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed reservation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers you.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Mongolia doesn't publish a fixed daily minimum, but officers can ask for bank statements or cash. Carrying the equivalent of ~$50 USD per day in cash or a card with a visible balance is a safe bet.Recommended
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay past your 30 days, you'll be fined roughly 20,000–50,000 MNT per day (about $6–$15 USD). Overstays over 30 days can lead to a ban from re-entry. Set a reminder on your phone to leave on time.
Get an eSIM before you land
Mongolia's mobile network is patchy outside Ulaanbaatar. An Airalo eSIM activates the moment you land — no airport queue, no SIM card hunt. Data plans start around $5 for 1 GB. It's a lifesaver for maps and translation.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar airport or land border
Most visitors fly into Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) in Ulaanbaatar. Land crossings from Russia or China are also possible. At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and the immigration officer will check your visa-free eligibility. They may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly — tourism or business.
3
Show return ticket if asked
The officer may request proof of onward travel. Have your return flight or onward ticket ready on your phone. If you're overlanding out, show a bus or train booking.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (30 days). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa before you travel or leave Mongolia and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines of around 20,000–50,000 MNT per day (about $6–$15 USD), and you may be banned from re-entry.
You need a visa. Apply at the Mongolian embassy in Sofia or any Mongolian consulate before you travel. A single-entry tourist visa typically costs around $50–$80 USD and allows up to 90 days. Processing takes 5–10 working days. You cannot get this visa on arrival.
No. For stays under 30 days, there's no registration requirement. If you somehow get a longer stay (e.g., through a visa), you'd need to register within 7 days at the Immigration Agency in Ulaanbaatar. But for visa-free visitors, just keep your entry stamp safe.
Yes. The main land crossings are at Altanbulag (from Russia) and Zamyn-Üüd (from China). The same visa-free rules apply — 30 days. Border crossings can be slow, especially at Zamyn-Üüd, so expect 1–3 hours for immigration. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
You'll likely be denied boarding by your airline or turned away at immigration. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel. If you're in a hurry, some airlines may accept 3 months, but don't risk it — get a new passport.
If you're transiting through Mongolia (e.g., flying from Europe to China with a layover in Ulaanbaatar) and you stay airside, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the airport, you need the visa-free entry (up to 30 days) or a visa. Check with your airline — some require a visa even for airside transit.
No vaccinations are mandatory for entry. However, the CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccines (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio) plus hepatitis A and typhoid, especially if you're visiting rural areas. Rabies vaccine is advised for long stays or if you'll be around animals. Check with a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.
