Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Bulgarian passport only needs to be valid for the period you plan to stay in Serbia. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Serbian law, but some airlines may ask for at least 3 months remaining.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Serbia
Border officers may ask to see a confirmed onward ticket out of Serbia or the Schengen area. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, bus, or train booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may request a hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter of invitation from your host in Serbia. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers can ask for evidence you have enough cash, cards, or bank statements to cover your expenses. Around €50–100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
No visa needed — but carry your passport at all times
Serbian law requires foreigners to carry their passport (or a certified copy) at all times. Police can ask for ID on the street. A photocopy of the main page and entry stamp is usually accepted, but the original is safest.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) or arrive by land from Bulgaria, join the queue for non-Schengen/non-EU passports. Bulgarian passports get fast-tracked — usually under 5 minutes.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and blank page. They may ask: 'How long are you staying?' and 'Where are you staying?' Answer clearly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. No visa sticker is needed. The stamp is your proof of legal entry — keep your passport safe.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. Green channel for nothing to declare. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is capped at 90 days within any 180-day period. You cannot extend it while in Serbia. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at the local police station before your 90 days expire — but that's for specific reasons like work or study, not tourism.
If you're staying in a hotel or hostel, they register you automatically. If you're staying in a private apartment (e.g., Airbnb), the host must register you within 24 hours. If they don't, you should go to the nearest police station yourself. Fines for non-registration can be around 10,000–50,000 RSD (€85–€425).
Yes. There are several border crossings between Bulgaria and Serbia (e.g., Kalotina–Gradina, Vrashka Chuka). Bulgarian passport holders can cross at any of them without a visa. The process is the same as at an airport — passport check, stamp, and you're through.
You will likely be denied entry. Serbian border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
Not for Bulgarian passport holders. There is no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. However, if an officer suspects you might overstay or work illegally, they could ask — but this is extremely rare for EU citizens.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. To work in Serbia, you need a work permit and a temporary residence permit. Your employer must sponsor the application.
Overstaying is a violation of Serbian immigration law. You could be fined (around 10,000–50,000 RSD), banned from re-entering for up to 6 months, or both. The fine is usually paid at the border when you leave. Avoid overstaying — set a reminder on your phone.
