Bulgarian passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Sierra Leone's airports and land borders. This is the standard way to enter for tourism or business in 2026 — no need to apply in advance.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Freetown International Airport. Have USD 80–100 in cash for the visa fee, plus a passport photo. The process takes 15–30 minutes at the immigration counter.Required
Valid passport
Original passport
Your Bulgarian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Sierra Leone. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Freetown ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Sierra Leone. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. Without one, you may be refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least USD 200 in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration may ask to see proof you can support yourself during your stay.Recommended
Cash only — no cards accepted
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in US dollars cash. ATMs at Lungi Airport are unreliable, and credit cards are not accepted at immigration. Bring at least $150 in crisp, new $100 bills to cover the visa and any unexpected costs.
Yellow fever certificate is mandatory
You must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated on the spot (and pay a fee). Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Lungi International Airport (or land border)
After landing, follow signs to immigration. You'll fill out a landing card (usually handed out on the plane or at the counter). Join the 'Visa on Arrival' queue — not the 'Diplomatic' or 'ECOWAS' line.
2
Submit documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, landing card, and return ticket. The officer will tell you the fee — pay in US dollars cash. They'll take your photo and fingerprints, then stamp the visa into your passport.
3
Collect your passport and proceed
Once processed (usually 5–15 minutes), you get your passport back with the visa sticker. Double-check the validity dates. Then head to baggage claim and customs.

Frequently asked questions

The fee is typically $80–$100 USD for a single-entry tourist visa, payable in cash (US dollars only). Bring crisp, new bills — old or torn notes may be refused. The exact amount can vary slightly, so carry a bit extra.
The visa on arrival is usually valid for 30 days. You can extend it once you're in Sierra Leone by visiting the Immigration Department in Freetown. Extensions cost around $50–$100 and can add another 30 days.
Yes, the visa on arrival is available at all official land border crossings, not just at Lungi International Airport. The process is the same — show your passport, pay the fee, and get the visa sticker.
Immigration may deny entry if you can't show proof of onward travel. Book a refundable ticket or a cheap onward flight to a neighboring country just in case. A bus ticket out of the country is not always accepted.
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry — you'll need to show the certificate at immigration. Also recommended: hepatitis A, typhoid, and malaria prophylaxis. Check with your travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.
Sierra Leone does not currently offer an e-visa for Bulgarian passport holders. The visa on arrival is the standard method. There is no need to apply in advance.
Denials are rare for Bulgarian citizens with proper documents. Common reasons: invalid passport, no return ticket, or insufficient funds. If denied, you'll be put on the next flight back at your own expense. Always carry proof of onward travel and enough cash.
