Bahraini passport holders need a visa to enter Portugal. You must apply for a Schengen visa before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option. Plan ahead: appointments at the Portuguese embassy or VFS Global in Manama can fill up weeks in advance.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a Schengen visa to enter Portugal. Apply at the Portugal Visa Portal at least 15 days before your trip — processing takes up to 15 calendar days. The visa allows you to stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all 27 Schengen countries, not just Portugal.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay
Your Bahraini passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Border officers at Lisbon and Porto airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping your passport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Portugal. Have a printed copy or a clear PDF on your phone — showing a booking.com reservation with your name works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Portugal requires you to show at least €40 per day of stay. A bank statement from the last 3 months or a credit card with a sufficient limit usually satisfies the officer. Keep a printed copy in your carry-on.Recommended
Appointment slots fill fast
VFS Global in Manama often has limited slots. Book your appointment as soon as you know your travel dates — at least 6–8 weeks in advance. Last-minute appointments are rare.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying a Schengen visa by even a day can result in a fine and a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Book your visa appointment
Go to the VFS Global website for Portugal in Bahrain (Manama). Slots open 2–3 months in advance. Book early — they fill up fast.
2
Prepare your documents
Gather passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, insurance, bank statements, and a completed Schengen visa application form. Make photocopies of everything.
3
Attend the appointment
Show up at VFS Global in Manama with all documents. Pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6). You'll give biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can stretch to 45 days if more checks are needed. Track your application online.
5
Collect your passport
Once approved, pick up your passport from VFS or have it couriered. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and spelling.
6
Enter Portugal
At Lisbon or Porto airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly — you're visiting as a tourist.
