Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by law, but airlines sometimes enforce a 3-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bosnia and Herzegovina
Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they rarely check, but it's a standard request for visa-free entries.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Bosnia and Herzegovina doesn't strictly enforce this, but having it ready avoids delays at passport control.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €50–€100 per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works fine. They rarely ask, but be prepared.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Bosnia, not from when you leave. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before your trip — you will be denied entry.
Register within 48 hours if staying in private accommodation
Hotels and hostels register you automatically. But if you're staying in an Airbnb or with friends, you must go to the nearest police station within 48 hours of arrival to register. Bring your passport and the address. Fines for not registering can be up to 200 BAM.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies or printouts of your booking confirmations and insurance policy.
2
Arrive at a border crossing
You can enter Bosnia by air (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar airports), land (from Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro), or sea (Neum). At the border, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask the purpose of your visit, how long you plan to stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Receive your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
5
Exit before your 90 days are up
Count your days from the entry stamp. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days expire.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at the local police station (Služba za strance) before your 90 days expire. This requires a valid reason (work, study, family reunion) and supporting documents. The process takes several weeks, so plan ahead.
If you stay in a hotel or hostel, the staff will register you automatically. If you stay in a private apartment or with friends, you must register yourself at the nearest police station within 48 hours of arrival. Bring your passport and the address of where you're staying. Failure to register can result in a fine.
Yes, as a Brazilian passport holder, you can enter Bosnia by land from any neighbouring country without a visa. The same 90-day visa-free rule applies. Just make sure your passport is valid for 6+ months and you have your return ticket and accommodation details ready.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (typically 50–200 BAM, about 25–100 EUR), and in some cases, you could be banned from re-entering Bosnia for a period. Always track your days carefully — use a travel app or mark your calendar.
No, travel insurance is not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Bosnia's public healthcare system does not cover foreign visitors, and a hospital stay for something like a broken leg can cost several thousand euros. A basic travel insurance policy is cheap peace of mind.
The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. It does not permit you to work for a Bosnian employer. However, working remotely for a foreign company (digital nomad style) is generally tolerated, but the law is not explicit. If you plan to stay long-term, consider applying for a digital nomad visa or temporary residence permit.
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Brazilian Embassy in Sarajevo (or the nearest consulate) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need the police report, a passport photo, and proof of identity. The embassy can issue a temporary passport valid for return travel to Brazil.
