Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your departure date from Latvia. The entire Schengen zone enforces this rule — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Airlines check this at check-in, so don't cut it close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Riga Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air also check this before letting you board. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Latvian border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend with their address is enough. I've been asked twice at Riga — better to have it on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Latvia doesn't publish a fixed amount, but officers may ask how you'll cover your trip. A credit card statement or a few hundred euros in cash usually satisfies them. I've never been asked, but a friend was — he showed his bank app and got waved through.Recommended
Schengen Zone Rules Apply
Latvia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free allowance applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined. A trip to France or Germany counts toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Border Control May Ask for Proof of Funds
While not always required, immigration officers can ask to see you have enough money for your stay. Carry a credit card and at least €100 in cash. If you can't show funds, they may deny entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga International Airport (RIX)
Most travelers fly into Riga. After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (not 'EU Citizens'). Join the queue for 'Non-EU / Non-Schengen' passports. Have your passport ready, and be prepared to show your return ticket and accommodation booking if asked.
2
Present Your Passport and Answer Questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and when you leave. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for proof of funds, but have a card or cash accessible.
3
Get Your Entry Stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away — it should show the date. If it's missing or unclear, ask politely for a correction. You're now in the Schengen area.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional checks for visa-free travelers. Exit into the arrivals hall. If you need a taxi, use the official Bolt or Forus apps from the airport — avoid touts.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. You cannot extend it from within Latvia. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (D-type) at the Latvian embassy in Brazil before traveling.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a visa or residence permit), you must register with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) within 30 days of arrival.
Yes. There are no internal border checks within the Schengen area. You can drive or take a bus from Estonia, Lithuania, or Poland without additional formalities. Just keep your passport handy in case of random checks.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced at Latvian borders. Renew your passport before traveling. If you have an emergency, contact the Brazilian embassy in Riga for a temporary passport.
No. If you're transiting through Riga Airport and staying airside (not passing through passport control), you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport or have a long layover, the visa-free rules apply — you can enter for up to 90 days.
No. The visa-free regime is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. Latvia has a separate Digital Nomad Visa for longer stays — you'd need to apply for that before traveling.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined (typically €100–300), banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years, or both. If you realize you've overstayed, contact the OCMA office in Riga immediately to regularize your status.
