Bulgaria entry requirements for Canada passport holders
Canadians can visit Bulgaria for tourism or business without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This rule applies from 2024 onward, including 2026. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Bulgaria | Your Canadian passport needs at least 3 months of validity after the day you leave Bulgaria. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, they may deny boarding. Bulgaria follows Schengen zone rules for passport validity. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from Bulgaria or the Schengen area | Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air enforce this strictly at check-in. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country also works. | Recommended |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation letter | Have a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with friends, carry their address and phone number written down. Border officers ask for this maybe 1 in 5 times — not having it can mean extra questioning. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself during the stay | Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least 100 BGN (~55 EUR) per day of your stay. Immigration rarely asks Canadians for this, but if they do, a recent bank statement on your phone suffices. | Recommended |
