What happens at the border

1
Apply online
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa, fill out the Standard Visitor visa application, and pay the fee (around £115 for 6 months). You'll get a reference number.
2
Book biometrics appointment
After submitting, book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Canada — locations include Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Montreal, and Halifax. Bring your passport and appointment confirmation.
3
Attend biometrics appointment
At the VAC, you'll provide fingerprints and a digital photo. You may also submit your passport and supporting documents. The whole thing takes about 15-20 minutes.
4
Wait for decision
Processing usually takes 3-4 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons (summer, holidays). You'll get an email when a decision is made. Your passport will be returned by courier or you can pick it up.
5
Travel to the UK
Once approved, you'll have a vignette (sticker) in your passport. At UK border control, join the 'All Other Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer may ask about your trip and funds.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 3-4 weeks, but can take up to 6 weeks during busy periods (May-September, December). You can pay for priority service (5 working days) for about £500 extra, or super priority (24 hours) for about £800 extra — availability varies by VAC.
No. The Standard Visitor visa is not extendable. You must leave before your visa expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type from Canada before travelling.
Not at the application stage, but you'll need one for entry. Immigration officers at the border may ask to see your return or onward ticket. Have a screenshot or printout ready.
You'll need to renew your passport first. The 6-month validity is calculated from your entry date, not your application date. If your passport expires sooner, your visa may be refused.
No. You cannot work (paid or unpaid), study for more than 30 days, or access public funds. Business activities like attending meetings or conferences are allowed, but you cannot be employed by a UK company.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining why. Common reasons include insufficient funds, unclear travel plans, or weak ties to Canada. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reasons. There's no appeal for visitor visas.
If you're Canadian and transiting through the UK (e.g., changing flights at Heathrow) and you stay airside, you generally don't need a visa. But if you need to pass through border control (e.g., to switch airports), you may need a Direct Airside Transit visa. Check gov.uk for your specific route.
