Canadian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka for tourism. The ETA is a straightforward online application, and you'll get approval quickly — usually within a day or two. Plan ahead and apply at least a few days before your flight, especially if you're traveling during peak season.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA / eVisaYou need to get this online approval before you fly; it's not available on arrival.
Apply online before travel
Canadian citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. Apply at the official Sri Lanka ETA website (https://eta.gov.lk/) at least a few days before travel. The ETA is valid for a single entry and allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not extendable.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding or entry.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your Canadian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in Sri Lanka. Ensure your passport does not expire before that period.Required
Blank passport pagesThe immigration officer needs a clean page to stamp your passport.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. It's wise to have a couple of spare pages for any additional stamps.Required
Return or onward ticketAirlines and immigration may ask to see this to ensure you don't overstay.
Proof of departure
You must be able to show a confirmed return or onward ticket to a destination outside Sri Lanka, proving you will leave before your ETA expires.Required
Proof of sufficient fundsNot always checked, but it's good to have evidence if asked.
For your stay
You should be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Sri Lanka. This could be cash, credit cards, or bank statements.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra forms on arrival beyond the standard immigration card.
Not required
Sri Lanka does not require a separate arrival declaration form for Canadian citizens. The ETA serves as your entry authorization. Not required
Vaccination requirementsCheck with a travel health clinic before you go.
Health entry rules
No specific vaccinations are mandatory for entry to Sri Lanka from Canada, but it's recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccines and consider hepatitis A, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis depending on your travel plans.Recommended
Use the official ETA website only
There are many third-party websites that look official but charge inflated fees. Always use https://eta.gov.lk/ — the government's official portal. The fee is around $50 USD, and you should never pay more than that for the standard tourist ETA.
30-day stay is non-extendable
The tourist ETA allows a maximum stay of 30 days and cannot be extended. If you think you might want to stay longer, plan for a visa run or check with Sri Lankan immigration before you arrive.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email address. Pay the fee (around $50 USD for the standard tourist ETA) with a credit card. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for approval
Most approvals come through within 24 hours, but it can take up to 3 days. Check your email (including spam folder) for the approval notice. Print it or save it on your phone — you'll need to show it at check-in.
3
At the airport in Canada
When checking in for your flight, the airline will verify your ETA. Have your passport and the ETA approval (printed or digital) ready. If you don't have it, you won't be allowed to board.
4
Arrival at Sri Lankan immigration
At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Foreign Passports'. Present your passport and ETA approval to the officer. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day tourist visa. No separate queue for ETA holders — it's the same line.
5
Collect your bags and exit
After the stamp, grab your luggage and head through customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods. Keep your passport handy — you'll need it again if you exchange money or book a SIM card.

Frequently asked questions

The standard tourist ETA costs around $50 USD. The official site is https://eta.gov.lk/. Be careful of third-party sites that charge extra fees — stick to the official government portal.
Most applications are approved within 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least 3 days before your flight to be safe. If you're in a rush, there's no official expedited option, but some travelers report getting approval in a few hours.
No, the standard tourist ETA is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave the country and re-apply, or check with the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo for special circumstances — but generally, plan for 30 days max.
It's not strictly required, but it's a good idea to have a printed copy or a screenshot on your phone. The airline will check it at check-in, and immigration officers may ask to see it. Having it handy avoids any confusion.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. Airlines are required to verify that you have a valid ETA before departure. There's no visa-on-arrival for Canadians at Sri Lankan airports, so don't risk it.
No, the standard tourist ETA is single-entry. If you leave Sri Lanka (e.g., to visit the Maldives) and want to return, you'll need to apply for a new ETA.
Yes, for practical purposes it's your visa. The ETA grants you a 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You don't need to visit an embassy or submit a paper application — it's all done online.
