Entry requirements

Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking showing you leave Canada before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Officers may ask where you're staying for the first few nights.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Show you can support yourself during your stay — recent bank statements, a credit card, or traveler's cheques work. No set minimum amount, but have enough to cover accommodation, food, and transport.Recommended
No eTA — visa required
Swiss passport holders cannot use the eTA system. You must apply for a full visitor visa before travelling. There are no exceptions for short visits or transit.
Processing times vary
Visa processing can take 2–4 weeks or longer during peak season (summer, holidays). Apply well in advance — don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the official Canada visa website (IRCC) and submit a visitor visa application. You'll need to upload documents: passport scan, photo, travel itinerary, proof of funds, and a letter of invitation if applicable. Pay the fee (around CAD 100). Processing takes 2–4 weeks on average.
2
Attend a biometrics appointment
After submitting, you'll get a letter asking for biometrics (fingerprints and photo). Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Switzerland — Zurich or Bern. Walk-ins are not accepted. Bring your passport and the biometrics letter.
3
Wait for visa decision
Once biometrics are done, IRCC processes your application. You'll receive a decision by email. If approved, the visa sticker is placed in your passport (you may need to mail it or drop it off at the VAC).
4
Travel to Canada
At the airport in Canada, go to the 'Visitors' queue at immigration. Present your passport with the visa sticker, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation. The officer may ask about your trip purpose and funds. Answer honestly. You'll get a stamp allowing entry for up to 6 months.
