Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in the Dominican Republic. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Dominican immigration, but airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Dominican Republic
Immigration officers at Punta Cana and Santo Domingo routinely ask for a return or onward ticket before letting you through. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — they rarely accept verbal promises.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their full address and phone number. Officers at the border sometimes ask where you're staying, and having a printed booking avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence you can support yourself during your stay
Dominican immigration can request proof you have enough money for your trip. A recent bank statement or a credit card showing a reasonable limit usually satisfies them — no specific minimum amount is published.Recommended
6-month passport rule strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of entry, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions. Renew your passport before booking flights.
Arrival card given on the plane
You'll receive an arrival card (Formulario de Migración) on the flight. Fill it out in blue or black ink. Keep the bottom portion — you'll need to hand it back when leaving the country.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Punta Cana (PUJ), Santo Domingo (SDQ), or Puerto Plata (POP), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-residents.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and the completed arrival card (given on the plane). The officer may ask for your return ticket — show the screenshot on your phone.
3
Get stamped in
The officer will stamp your passport and write the number of days granted (usually 30). Check the stamp before walking away. If you need more time, ask politely at this point.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel means nothing to declare; red channel means you have goods to declare. Keep your passport and arrival card handy until you leave the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Swiss passport holders are typically granted 30 days on arrival. You can extend once for up to 60 more days by visiting the immigration office (Dirección General de Migración) in Santo Domingo or regional offices. The extension costs about 2,500 DOP (around 45 USD).
Yes, apply for a one-time extension of up to 60 days. Go to the immigration office in Santo Domingo (Av. Máximo Gómez) or a regional branch. Bring your passport, entry stamp page, and fee (about 2,500 DOP). Processing takes a few hours to a day.
Yes, you need a ticket out of the Dominican Republic to any destination — it doesn't have to be back to Switzerland. A one-way ticket to a third country is fine if you have the required visa for that country.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by immigration. Renew your passport before travel. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced.
No, the tourist card fee (formerly 10 USD) is now included in your airline ticket. You don't need to pay anything extra at immigration.
Technically, visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is in a grey area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but officially you're not allowed to work for a Dominican company. For long-term remote work, consider the Digital Nomad Visa (up to 12 months).
Report the loss to local police and get a police report. Then contact the Swiss Embassy in Santo Domingo (Calle Rafael Augusto Sánchez, Ensanche Piantini). They can issue an emergency passport. Bring a copy of your passport and a passport photo if available.
