Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swiss passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Eswatini — no 6-month rule applies. Airlines at Zurich or Geneva may still ask to see at least 3 months validity, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Eswatini
Immigration officers at King Mswati III International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they won't let you through without one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, lodge booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the immigration counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Keep a recent bank statement or a credit card with a visible limit handy. Immigration may ask how you'll cover your expenses — a quick glance at a statement or card usually satisfies them.Recommended
South African rand works everywhere
You don't need to exchange to Swazi lilangeni. Bring South African rand in cash — it's accepted at all shops, taxis, and markets. ATMs dispense rand too.
No visa extension possible
The 30-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, you must leave the country and re-enter, or get a visa before you travel. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at King Mswati III International Airport (SHO) or land border
At the airport, follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a small terminal, queues are usually short. At land borders (e.g., Oshoek/Ngwenya from South Africa), the process is similar. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport and return/onward ticket. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day entry.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up any checked bags from the carousel (if flying) and walk through customs. There's usually no baggage check unless you're carrying restricted items.
