Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Ghana
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Ghana does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines flying into Accra may still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Ghana Immigration officers at Kotoka International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. If you're overlanding out, a bus ticket or ferry booking works too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number covers this. Airbnb bookings are accepted.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Immigration may ask for bank statements or cash. Have at least $500 USD equivalent in cash or a card you can show. ATMs at Accra airport dispense Ghanaian cedis, but having some USD in hand helps.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
Ghana strictly enforces the yellow fever vaccine requirement. You must show your yellow card at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated on the spot (and possibly fined). Get the shot at least 10 days before you travel.
Keep your documents handy
At Kotoka airport, the immigration queue can move fast. Have your passport, boarding pass, and yellow card ready in your hand — not buried in your bag. It'll save you fumbling and keep the line moving.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kotoka International Airport (or land border)
At Accra's Kotoka airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the queue for non-Ghanaian passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The immigration officer will check your passport, stamp it, and you're in. At land borders like Aflao or Elubo, the process is similar — just walk up to the immigration desk.
2
Present your passport for stamping
Hand over your passport. The officer will verify your identity and stamp the entry date. No visa is needed, so no forms to fill. If asked, show your return ticket or accommodation confirmation. The whole thing takes 2-5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim (if flying), then walk through customs. There's usually no customs check for personal items. You're free to enter Ghana.
