What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), print or screenshot your return ticket, first night booking confirmation, and travel insurance. Keep them in a folder or on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or any Schengen border
You'll enter Hungary through Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) or another Schengen airport. Join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and return date. Answer clearly and honestly. They may stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
If everything is in order, you'll get an entry stamp. That stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Collect your luggage and exit the arrivals area.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits only. You cannot work for a Hungarian employer or provide services to a Hungarian company. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — technically not allowed, but rarely checked. For any work, you need a work visa or residence permit.
No. The 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended. You must leave the Schengen area before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen zone. If you need to stay longer, apply for a national visa (D-type) or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (typically €100-300), deported, and banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully — use a Schengen calculator app.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a visa or permit), you must register with the immigration office within 30 days of arrival.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a bus from Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Croatia without showing your passport. However, you must still respect the 90/180-day rule for the entire Schengen area.
You will likely be denied entry. Hungarian border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. If your passport is damaged (torn, water-damaged, missing pages), renew it before traveling. A damaged passport can also be refused.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Hungary can be high for uninsured visitors. A basic travel insurance policy covering €30,000 in medical expenses and repatriation costs around €20-50 for a 2-week trip.
