What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, check your passport is valid for 6+ months from entry. Book your return ticket and first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web to get a QR code.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any international airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Arrivals'. Have your passport, boarding pass, and (if you registered) your Visit Japan Web QR code ready.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags, then proceed to customs. If you used Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the automated gate. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration form.
5
Exit and enjoy your stay
Once through customs, you're free to enter Japan. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and if you leave the country.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable for tourism. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type (like a work or student visa) before traveling.
Overstaying is serious. You could be fined, detained, and deported, and you may be banned from re-entering Japan for several years. Always leave on time.
It's not a formal requirement, but immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash (or a bank statement) is wise.
No, the visa-free 'Temporary Visitor' status does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. If you're caught, you risk deportation and a ban. Japan has a separate 'Digital Nomad Visa' for remote workers — check if you qualify.
It's a free online system (https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) where you pre-register your passport, flight, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that speeds you through immigration and customs. It's optional but highly recommended — it can save 30 minutes or more at busy airports like Narita or Haneda.
No, it's not required for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Japan are high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of dollars a day. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation.
Yes, you can leave and re-enter Japan multiple times as long as each stay is under 90 days and you have a valid return ticket. However, immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits — they might suspect you're living in Japan without a proper visa.
