What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or screenshot your return ticket and first night hotel booking. Download a migration card sample online so you know what to expect.
2
Arrive at Russian passport control
At major airports like Moscow Sheremetyevo or St. Petersburg Pulkovo, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport, migration card, and return ticket if asked. The officer will stamp your entry and keep the entry portion of the migration card.
3
Keep the migration card exit portion
The officer returns the exit portion of the migration card. Staple it inside your passport — you'll need to hand it back when leaving Russia. If you lose it, expect delays and a possible fine at departure.
4
Register your stay (if staying more than 7 days)
If you stay longer than 7 days in one place, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration office. Hotels do this automatically; private hosts need to do it within 7 days of your arrival.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day stay is not extendable. You must leave Russia before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or deportation.
If you stay in one place for more than 7 days, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration office. Hotels handle this automatically. For private accommodation, the host must do it within 7 days of your arrival. If you move cities, you may need re-registration.
You'll need to report the loss to the local migration office and get a replacement. This can take a day or two and may involve a small fine (around 500–1000 RUB). Keep it safe — it's as important as your passport.
Yes, as long as it's an official international checkpoint. Most travelers fly into Moscow (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo) or St. Petersburg (Pulkovo). Land borders from EU countries are open but expect longer queues.
Not officially required for visa-free entry, but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Russia can be high, and public hospitals may require upfront payment. A basic travel insurance policy covers emergencies.
No. The visa-free regime is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. For work or study, you need a proper visa and work/study permit. Overstaying or working without authorization can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban.
The local currency is the Russian Ruble (RUB). Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in cities, but many international cards may not work due to sanctions. Bring some cash in euros or US dollars to exchange at banks or exchange offices. Avoid exchanging at airports — rates are poor.
