Chinese passport holders need an approved visa before flying to Australia. The easiest option for short visits is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which is linked to your passport electronically. As of 2026, you must apply online before you travel — there are no visa-on-arrival options.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa (ETA) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
Apply for the ETA via the official Australian ETA app — the website version is run by third parties who charge extra. The app costs $20 AUD and approval usually comes through in seconds. Do not use any third-party site that asks for more money.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Chinese passport must be valid for the whole time you plan to be in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return ticket or proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Australia ready — they will check it before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, you need to show where you are staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself. There is no fixed minimum, but having access to at least AUD 1,000–2,000 for a short trip covers you if asked.Recommended
Apply early — don't wait until the airport
The ETA is quick, but if there's a system glitch or your application gets flagged for manual review, you could be stuck. Apply at least 3 days before departure.
Australia's biosecurity is no joke
Declare all food, plants, animal products, and outdoor gear. Fines for undeclared items start at AUD 2,664 and can go much higher. When in doubt, declare it.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or use the official ETA app. Fill in your passport details, personal info, and travel plans. Pay the fee (around AUD 20). Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least a few days before your flight.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save on your phone: your ETA approval email, return flight booking, first night hotel confirmation, and travel insurance certificate. Keep your passport easily accessible.
3
Arrive at the airport in China
At check-in, the airline will verify your ETA is linked to your passport. They may also ask to see your return ticket. Board your flight.
4
Arrive in Australia
At immigration, use the SmartGate kiosk if available (for e-passport holders). Scan your passport, answer a few questions on screen, and get a ticket. Hand it to the officer. If no SmartGate, join the queue and present your passport and any requested documents.
5
Collect your bags and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your luggage and proceed through customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Fines for undeclared items can be steep.
