Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your departure date from Bulgaria. It must have been issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages for visa stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket out of Bulgaria or the Schengen area. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation, rental agreement, or a notarized invitation letter from a host in Bulgaria. Officers may ask for this at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry bank statements, cash, or a credit card showing you have enough money for your trip. The exact amount is not fixed, but around 50 EUR per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
No visa on arrival
There is no visa-on-arrival for Chinese passport holders at any Bulgarian airport or land border. You must have a visa sticker in your passport before you board your flight. Airlines will check this before letting you check in.
Bulgaria is not in Schengen (yet)
Bulgaria is not part of the Schengen Area, but it uses the same visa application form and rules. A Bulgarian visa only allows you to enter Bulgaria (and Romania, by land). It does not let you travel to other EU countries. If you plan to visit multiple EU countries, apply for a Schengen visa instead.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, bank statements, flight and hotel bookings, travel insurance, and the completed visa application form. Make copies of everything.
2
Book a visa appointment
Go to the Bulgarian embassy website (Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou) and book an appointment. Slots can fill up weeks in advance, especially in summer.
3
Attend the interview
Show up at the embassy on time with all original documents plus photocopies. You'll submit your application, pay the fee (around €80), and give fingerprints. The interview is usually brief — they just verify your documents.
4
Wait for processing
Processing takes 10–15 working days on average. You can track your application online if the embassy provides a tracking number. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
5
Collect your passport
Once approved, your passport with the visa sticker will be ready for pickup at the embassy, or they may mail it back to you. Check the visa dates carefully — they match your travel dates.
6
Enter Bulgaria
At Sofia Airport or any land border, present your passport with the visa. The officer may ask to see your return ticket and hotel booking. Have them ready on your phone. They'll stamp you in — that stamp is your entry record.

Frequently asked questions

If you're just changing planes at Sofia Airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you generally don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the transit area or have a layover longer than 24 hours, you will need a visa. Check with your airline before booking.
Standard processing is 10–15 working days. In busy periods (May–September), it can take up to 30 days. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your planned departure.
No. You must submit the application in person at the Bulgarian embassy in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. There is no e-visa for Chinese passport holders.
The visa fee is approximately €80 (about 620 CNY) for adults. Children aged 6–12 pay about €40. Fees are paid in local currency at the embassy. There may be an additional service fee if you use a visa application center.
You can appeal the decision within 15 days of receiving the rejection letter. The appeal must be in writing and submitted to the same embassy. Common reasons for rejection: insufficient funds, unclear travel plans, or weak ties to China. Address the specific reason in your appeal.
No. Bulgarian visas are not extendable. You must leave before the visa expiry date. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to apply for a different type of visa (e.g., a long-stay visa) from China before traveling.
Immigration officers can ask to see proof of funds when you enter. Have your bank statements or a credit card ready. The rule of thumb is about €50–100 per day of your stay.
