Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Mexico visa required
Apply for a Mexico visa at a Mexican consulate before travel. The visa application is processed by the SRE (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores). Submit your application in person at the consulate with jurisdiction over your residence. Processing takes 5–15 business days depending on the consulate.Apply for Mexico visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Mexico. Mexico does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Mexican airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Mexico. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient money for your stay
Have bank statements or cash available to show you can cover your expenses. There is no fixed minimum amount, but having at least $500 USD equivalent is a safe benchmark. Immigration officers rarely ask, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Chinese passport holders cannot enter Mexico without a visa. There is no e-visa or visa-on-arrival option. Start the application process at least 4 weeks before your trip to avoid delays.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Mexico, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the visa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visa at the Mexican embassy or consulate
Book an appointment at the Mexican embassy in Beijing or one of the consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Hong Kong. Submit the completed application form, your passport, photos, and supporting documents. Pay the visa fee (around $36–$48 USD, depending on the consulate). Processing takes 5–10 business days.
2
Prepare your documents for immigration
Before you fly, print or save digital copies of your visa, passport, return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in your carry-on — you'll need them at the immigration counter at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) or Cancún (CUN).
3
Arrive in Mexico and go through immigration
At the airport, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Hand over your passport with the visa, your boarding pass, and the completed Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) — you'll get this on the plane or at the counter. The officer may ask about your plans and funds. Answer clearly. After stamping, you're free to enter.
