Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a South African eVisa at the official Department of Home Affairs portal. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so submit at least two weeks before departure. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 2 blank pages
Your Chinese passport needs at least 2 consecutive blank pages for entry stamps. Validity must cover your entire stay — South Africa does not enforce a 6-month rule, but airlines may check for it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket showing you leave South Africa before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Show you have at least 3,000 ZAR per day of your stay, either as a bank statement from the last 3 months or cash. Immigration may ask at the counter.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no visa on arrival
Chinese passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival in South Africa. You must have the eVisa approved before you fly. Airlines check this at check-in.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in South Africa, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it first.

What happens at the border

Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with your eVisa. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Prepare your documents for travel
Before you leave for the airport, gather: passport, eVisa printout, return ticket, hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
