Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is part of the Schengen zone for visa-free travel, so the 90-day limit applies across all 27 Schengen countries combined — not just Bulgaria.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria or Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight or bus ticket ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a host with their address and contact details ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may need to show you have enough money for your trip. A bank statement or credit card with a daily limit of around 50 EUR per day is usually sufficient.Recommended
90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen area
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria counts toward the 90/180-day limit for all Schengen countries. If you've already spent 90 days in France, Germany, or other Schengen states, you cannot enter Bulgaria visa-free. Track your days carefully.
Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly recommended
While Bulgarian immigration does not require travel insurance for visa-free entry, medical costs can be high. A basic policy covering emergencies and repatriation costs around €30–50 for a 90-day trip is a smart investment.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups. Consider buying travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Bulgarian border checkpoint
You'll enter through Sofia Airport, Varna Airport, Burgas Airport, or a land border from Greece, Romania, Turkey, Serbia, or North Macedonia. Join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and return date. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it for exit.
5
Exit before 90 days
Count your days carefully. Overstaying even by one day can result in fines, a ban, or trouble with future Schengen travel. Set a reminder a week before your 90th day.
