Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Russia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Russian law, but some airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Russia
Immigration officers at Russian airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready to show.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
You may be asked to show a hotel reservation or a private invitation (visa support letter) at passport control. Have a printed confirmation or a digital copy accessible.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Border officers can request proof you have enough funds for your trip. Carry at least 500 USD equivalent in cash or a credit card with a recent bank statement.Recommended
Keep your migration card safe
The departure portion of the migration card is your exit ticket. Lose it and you'll need to visit a migration office to get a replacement — which can take a day or two. Keep it with your passport at all times.
Registration is your host's responsibility
If you're staying in a private apartment, your host must register you within 7 days. Ask them to confirm it's done. Hotels handle this automatically. Unregistered stays can lead to fines and problems when leaving Russia.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save on your phone: passport info page, return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance certificate. Keep them in a folder you can access quickly.
2
Fill out the migration card on arrival
At passport control in any Russian airport (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Pulkovo, etc.), you'll receive a small paper card. Fill in your personal details, purpose of visit, and where you're staying. Keep the departure portion with your passport — you'll hand it back when leaving.
3
Present documents at passport control
Hand over your passport, migration card, and return ticket. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer calmly. They'll stamp your passport and return the departure card.
4
Register your stay within 7 days
If you're staying in a hotel, they'll handle registration automatically. If you're in a private apartment, your host must register you with the local migration office within 7 days of arrival. Ask them to confirm it's done.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free period is fixed at 90 days and cannot be extended. You must leave before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or deportation.
Yes. If you're staying in a hotel, they'll register you automatically. If you're in a private apartment, your host must register you with the local migration office within 7 days of arrival. Always confirm this is done — failure to register can cause problems when leaving.
You must report the loss to the nearest migration office (UFMS) and get a replacement. This can take a day or two. Keep the card with your passport at all times — you'll need it to exit the country.
Yes, as long as it's an official international checkpoint. Major airports (Moscow, St Petersburg, Kazan) are fine. Land borders from EU countries or Kazakhstan also work, but expect longer queues and more document checks.
It's not a legal requirement, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Russia are high — a simple hospital visit can cost $200–$500, and serious treatment runs into thousands. Insurance covers that and also helps with trip cancellation or lost luggage.
Stay calm. Ask the officer for the reason in writing. You have the right to contact your embassy (Colombian embassy in Moscow: +7 495 937 17 00). They can help clarify the situation, but they can't override immigration decisions. Common reasons: missing return ticket, insufficient funds, or unclear purpose of visit.
No. The visa-free regime is for tourism, business visits, and private trips only. Working or studying requires a proper visa. If you're caught, you'll be fined and deported.
