Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Colombian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Uruguay. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Uruguayan immigration, but airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Uruguay
Immigration officers at Carrasco Airport and the border crossings routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight or bus ticket out of Uruguay ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. I've been asked twice at Montevideo airport — better to have it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Uruguay doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but officers expect to see you have enough cash or credit for your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit works. I've never been asked, but I've seen others pulled aside for not having it.Recommended
Passport validity counts from arrival
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Uruguay, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you go.
No extension available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, you must leave Uruguay and re-enter, or apply for a different visa before your 90 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from arrival), print or save your return ticket and hotel booking, and consider getting travel insurance.
2
Board your flight
At check-in, the airline will verify your passport and onward ticket. They may also ask for proof of accommodation. Have everything ready to avoid delays.
3
Arrive at Carrasco International Airport (MVD) or other entry point
After landing, follow signs to 'Migraciones' (immigration). Queues are usually short. Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods to declare.

Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism and business meetings only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area. Many travelers do it, but officially you should not work for a Uruguayan company without a work visa.
