Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash. ATMs are available only after you clear immigration. Bring USD, THB, or LAK in exact change if possible.
Keep your departure card

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the border, you'll get a Lao arrival/departure card. Fill it out in capital letters. Keep the departure stub safe — you'll need it when you leave.
2
Queue at Visa on Arrival counter
At Wattay International Airport (Vientiane) or Luang Prabang Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. Hand over your passport, photo, arrival card, and fee. Wait 5–15 minutes while they process it.
3
Pay and collect your visa
They'll call your name or hand back your passport with the visa sticker. Check the validity dates before walking away. Then proceed to immigration for the entry stamp.
4
Pass through immigration
Show your passport with the new visa, arrival card, and sometimes your return ticket. They'll stamp you in. Keep the departure card stub in your passport.

Yes, you can extend your visa at the Immigration Department in Vientiane or at provincial immigration offices. Extensions cost about $2 per day and can be done for up to 30 days total. You'll need your passport, a photo, and the fee in cash.
