Czech passport holders need a visa or travel authorisation before flying to Australia. From 2026, the simplest option for short tourist or business visits is the ETA (Electronic Travel Authority), which you apply for entirely online. Plan ahead — processing can take a few days, and you won't be allowed to board without an approved ETA.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA (Australia) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
You must apply for an ETA before flying to Australia. Download the official Australian ETA app (not a third-party website) and pay the $20 AUD fee. Approval usually comes through in seconds, but apply at least a few days before departure just in case.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Czech passport must be valid for the whole time you're in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in, and Australian immigration will deny boarding if your passport expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof you're leaving Australia within your visa validity. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward flight or ferry booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a fixed itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You should be able to show you have enough cash, credit cards, or bank statements to cover your expenses in Australia. There's no fixed minimum, but having access to at least AUD 1,000 per month is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply early — don't gamble with last minute
While most ETAs are approved in minutes, some get flagged for manual review and can take up to 72 hours. If you apply the day before your flight and it's still pending, you won't board. Apply at least a week ahead.
SmartGate speeds up arrival
At major Australian airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast), Czech passport holders can use SmartGate kiosks. Scan your passport, answer a few questions, get a ticket, and hand it to an officer. It cuts immigration time to under 10 minutes.
Australia's biosecurity is no joke
Declare all food, plant material, wood, animal products, and soil. Fines start at AUD 2,664 for undeclared items. Even a sandwich from the plane counts. When in doubt, declare it — you won't be penalised for declaring something that's not allowed.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or download the ETA app. Fill in your passport details, travel dates, and answer a few questions. Pay AUD 20. Most applications are approved within minutes, but some take up to 72 hours — apply at least a week before your flight.
2
Book your flight and accommodation
Book a return or onward ticket. Reserve your first night's accommodation. Keep all confirmations on your phone or printed.
3
Check in for your flight
At the airport, the airline will check your ETA status electronically. Have your passport ready. If your ETA hasn't been approved yet, you won't be allowed to board.
4
Arrive at an Australian airport
You'll go through immigration at your first Australian airport (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, etc.). Use the SmartGate kiosk if eligible — scan your passport, answer a few questions, get a ticket, and hand it to an officer. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then go through customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity laws.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) before you fly. It's not a traditional visa — it's a digital travel authorisation linked to your passport. Apply online, cost is AUD 20, and it's valid for 12 months for multiple stays of up to 3 months each.
Most are approved within minutes, but some take up to 72 hours. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe. If it's still pending at check-in, the airline won't let you board.
No. The ETA allows a maximum stay of 3 months per visit. You cannot extend it. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a Visitor Visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. Airlines check ETA status electronically at check-in. If you somehow arrive without one, you'll be refused entry and sent back on the next flight — at your own expense.
Yes, if you plan to enter New Zealand. But if you're just transiting through an Australian airport (staying airside), you don't need an Australian visa — you need a Transit Visa (subclass 771) or a valid ETA. Check with your airline.
No. The ETA is for tourism and short business visits only (meetings, conferences). You cannot work for an Australian employer. If you want to work, you need a work visa (e.g., Working Holiday Visa subclass 417 for Czech citizens under 31).
Your ETA is linked to your passport number. If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new ETA. The old one won't transfer. Apply for the new ETA after you receive your new passport.
