Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Since Bulgaria is part of the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — your passport doesn't need extra validity beyond your departure date.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Border officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a host with their address is enough — keep it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly 50 EUR per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works fine.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Bulgaria, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you go.
Bulgaria is not in Schengen yet
Even though you're an EU citizen, Bulgaria is not yet part of the Schengen Area. You'll go through passport control and get a stamp. Keep your passport handy.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-EU nationals (even though you're EU, Bulgaria is not yet in Schengen). Have your passport ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. Keep the stamp dry.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through the green 'nothing to declare' channel if you have no goods to declare.
