Czech citizens don't need a visa for Slovakia. Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so you can cross the border with just your national ID card or passport. This has been the case since 2007 and remains unchanged in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Slovakia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries, not just Slovakia.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Slovak border crossings routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free limit. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Slovakia covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Border guards can request evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €56 per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this check.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries. If you've already spent 60 days in France this year, you only have 30 days left for Slovakia (and all other Schengen states). Keep track using the Schengen calculator app.
ID card vs passport — border checks
While an ID card works for entry, some border officers (especially at airports) prefer a passport. If you have both, bring your passport — it's more universally accepted and gives you a stamped entry record.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at border crossing
At Bratislava Airport or any land border from Czechia, join the 'EU/EEA/CH' queue. Have your passport or ID card ready.
2
Present your document
Hand over your passport or ID card. The officer may ask your purpose of visit (tourism, business, family) and how long you plan to stay. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Answer any follow-up questions
You might be asked for your return ticket or accommodation booking. Have these ready on your phone or printed.
4
Receive entry stamp (if passport used)
If you use a passport, the officer will stamp it with the entry date. If using an ID card, no stamp is given — keep your boarding pass or ticket as proof of entry date.

As a Czech citizen, you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen Area. This applies to all Schengen countries combined, not just Slovakia.
No. If you're driving your own car, you don't need a separate ticket. But if asked, just explain your travel plans — e.g., 'I'm driving back to Brno on Saturday.'
You should renew it before travel. If it expires during your stay, contact the Czech embassy in Bratislava immediately. You may face issues leaving or re-entering Schengen.
Yes, for short stays (under 90 days) you can work remotely for a Czech employer. You don't need a work permit. But if you plan to work for a Slovak company, you'll need a work permit.
No. For stays over 90 days, you need to apply for a temporary residence permit at the Slovak Foreign Police office before your 90-day period ends. Start the process at least 30 days before your 90 days are up.
