Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may ask for at least 3 months validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Immigration officers at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border guards may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. Have it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You need to demonstrate at least 20 times the minimum subsistence level per day (around 2,500 UAH or ~$65 USD as of 2025). A bank statement or credit card with available limit works.Recommended
Registration deadline: 3 days
If you're staying in a private apartment (not a hotel), you must register with the local migration office within 3 working days of arrival. Hotels do this automatically. Failing to register can cause problems when leaving.
Currency and cash
Ukraine uses the hryvnia (UAH). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but have some cash for smaller shops, taxis, and rural areas. ATMs are common. Exchange euros or dollars at banks or official exchange points — avoid street changers.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before travel
Print or save on your phone: passport (check validity), return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them together in a folder or a notes app.
2
Arrive at Ukrainian border control
At any entry point (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, land borders from Poland/Slovakia/Hungary/Romania/Moldova), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and any requested documents.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day stay. Check the stamp is legible before walking away.
4
Register your stay (if staying more than 3 days)
If you stay longer than 3 days, your hotel or host must register you with local migration authorities. If you're in a private apartment, you need to do this yourself at a migration office. Not doing it can cause issues when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Ukraine before 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit (which requires a reason like work or study) at a migration office in Ukraine.
If you stay more than 3 days, your hotel or host must register you with the State Migration Service. If you're staying in a private apartment (e.g., Airbnb), you must register yourself within 3 days at the local migration office. Bring your passport and accommodation contract. It's free but takes about 30 minutes.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (around 1,700–5,100 UAH, roughly €40–€120), and in some cases banned from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. Always leave on time.
Yes. Czech citizens can enter Ukraine at any land border checkpoint. The most common are Medyka-Shehyni (from Poland) and Uzhhorod (from Slovakia). Expect longer queues at land borders, especially during holidays. Have your documents ready.
No, it's not legally required for Czech passport holders. But it's strongly recommended. Medical care in Ukraine is not free for foreigners, and a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day. Many travel insurance policies cover Ukraine.
You will be denied entry. Ukrainian border control strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
No. The visa-free regime is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. If you plan to work or study, you need a visa or residence permit. Working without permission is illegal and can lead to deportation.
