German passport holders don't need a traditional visa to visit the UK for tourism, business, or short study (up to 6 months). Since January 2025, you'll need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you fly. With the ETA, you can stay up to 180 days per visit, but you can't extend it.

Apply for United Kingdom eVisaRequired for most visa-exempt visitors since 2024-2025. Not a visa — approval is linked electronically to your passport. Apply before you travel.

eGates save time
If you're 12 or older with a biometric German passport, use the eGates. It's usually faster than the manned booths. No stamps, no questions — just scan and walk through.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa and fill out the form. You'll need your passport details and a valid email. Pay the £10 fee and wait for approval — usually minutes, but give yourself at least 48 hours.
2
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, print or save your ETA confirmation, return ticket, and accommodation booking. Check your passport has a blank page and is valid for your whole stay.
3
Arrive at the UK border
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, follow signs for 'UK Border'. German passports are eligible for eGates (automated barriers) — just scan your passport and look at the camera. If eGates are unavailable or you're travelling with children under 12, join the 'All other passports' queue.
4
Speak with a border officer (if manual)
If you're sent to a booth, hand over your passport and be ready to answer: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and when you leave. Keep calm and be honest. Officers may ask to see your return ticket or proof of funds.
5
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the date you must leave. Double-check it's correct. You're allowed to stay up to 180 days, but the stamp may give a shorter period — that's your hard limit.
