United Kingdom entry requirements for Germany passport holders
German passport holders do not need a visa to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or short study (up to 6 months). You can enter visa-free and stay up to 180 days per visit. You still need a valid passport that meets the UK's entry requirements.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ETA application Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) | Since January 8, 2025, German passport holders need an ETA to enter the UK. Apply at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips over 2 years. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for ETA | Required |
| Valid passport Must cover your entire stay | Your German passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in the UK. No 6-month validity rule applies for German nationals. Airlines may still check expiry at check-in, so carry a passport with at least a few months left. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from the UK | Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at UK airports. A flight, train, or ferry booking out of the UK within your 180-day visa-free limit works. If you're overlanding to Ireland, have a bus or ferry ticket ready. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Carry a printed or digital hotel booking for your first few nights. If staying with friends, have their address and phone number written down. UK immigration rarely asks for this, but having it avoids delays. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself | Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. UK border officers rarely ask for specific amounts, but being able to show £50–100 per day in available funds keeps things smooth. Cash is not expected. | Recommended |
