Danish passport holders don't need a visa for short stays in Bulgaria. As of 2026, you can visit for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. Just ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Bulgaria. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required for Bulgarian immigration, but your airline may check for at least 3 months validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave Bulgaria within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to another Schengen country works, but a flight booking is the safest option.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your Bulgarian host ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Bulgarian law requires visitors to show at least 50 EUR per day of stay, or 100 EUR per day if staying in a hotel. A bank statement or cash works — officers rarely ask, but be ready.Recommended
Bulgaria is not in Schengen
Even though Bulgaria is an EU member, it's not yet part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day Schengen allowance is separate from your 90-day Bulgarian allowance. A trip to Bulgaria does not count against your Schengen days.
Overstaying can get you banned
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period even by a day can result in a fine of around 500 BGN (about 255 EUR) and a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports (Bulgaria is not yet in Schengen). Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation booking. Answer clearly — they speak some English in major airports.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp records your allowed stay.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're in.
