Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not just Hungary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Border officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address is enough. Keep it on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly €100 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works fine.Recommended
6-month passport rule is strictly enforced
Hungarian border officers check passport validity from your entry date, not your departure date. If your passport expires in less than 6 months from landing, renew it first. No exceptions.
Schengen 90/180 day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance covers all Schengen countries combined, not just Hungary. Keep track of your days — overstaying can result in fines and a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport (BUD) or other entry point
At Budapest Airport, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport, may ask about your trip duration and accommodation, then stamp you in.
3
Present documents if asked
Immigration officers rarely ask for proof of funds or return tickets for Danish passport holders, but have them accessible. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation confirmation calmly.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once stamped, you're free to enter. The stamp shows your entry date. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks.
