Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Lesotho. Airlines at Copenhagen and other EU hubs will check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Lesotho
Immigration officers at Moshoeshoe I International Airport ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a clear digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Lesotho. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Immigration may ask to see it if you look like you might work illegally.Recommended
14-day limit is strict
The visa-free stay is exactly 14 days from the date of entry. It cannot be extended. If you need more time, apply for a visa before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Land borders can be slow
If entering by road from South Africa, expect queues of 30 minutes to 2 hours at peak times (weekends, holidays). Bring water and patience. The Maseru Bridge border is the busiest.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU)
Most travellers fly into Maseru via Johannesburg or Cape Town. After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' – it's a small terminal, so you can't miss it.
2
Queue at the foreign passport counter
Join the line for non-SADC passports. Have your passport, return ticket (printed or on phone), and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp you in – usually takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's a customs check (green/nothing to declare or red/goods to declare). If you have nothing to declare, walk straight through.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 14-day visa-free period is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Lesotho embassy before you travel, or leave and re-enter after a short absence.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering. Always leave before your stamp expires. If you have a genuine emergency, contact the Lesotho Immigration Department in Maseru immediately.
If you're transiting (staying airside and leaving within 24 hours), you generally do not need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration to catch a connecting flight, the 14-day visa-free rule applies. Check with your airline.
Yes, there are several land border posts (e.g., Maseru Bridge, Caledonspoort, Ficksburg Bridge). The same visa-free rules apply: 14 days, passport valid for 6 months, and a return ticket. Expect longer queues at peak times.
No vaccinations are mandatory for entry. However, hepatitis A, typhoid, and routine vaccines (MMR, DTP) are recommended. Yellow fever vaccine is required only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk.
No, it's not required by law. But medical care in Lesotho is limited and can be expensive. Evacuation to South Africa may be needed for serious issues. Insurance is strongly advised.
The local currency is the Lesotho loti (LSL), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand (ZAR). South African rand is widely accepted everywhere. Bring some cash in rand for taxis, markets, and small shops. Cards work in major hotels and supermarkets in Maseru.
