Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in North Macedonia. Airlines rarely check beyond that, but carry a printed copy of your flight itinerary just in case.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from North Macedonia
Immigration officers at Skopje Airport ask for a return or onward ticket on arrival. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least €50 per day of your stay. Officers almost never ask Danish passport holders, but it's smart to have it ready.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. Immigration at Skopje Airport has been known to deny entry to travellers with passports valid for less than 6 months.
No visa, but still need a return ticket
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. A screenshot on your phone is usually fine.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
You'll enter through Skopje International Airport, Ohrid Airport, or a land border from Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, or Albania. At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return ticket. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. The whole process takes 1-2 minutes if there's no queue.
3
Receive entry stamp
You'll get an entry stamp in your passport showing the date of entry. That's it — no visa, no fee, no forms to fill out.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave after 90 days. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit from the Ministry of Interior in Skopje before your 90 days are up — this is a separate process and not guaranteed.
If you're staying in a hotel, they'll register you automatically. If you're in a private apartment or with friends, your host should register you at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. If they don't, you could face a fine. Ask your host to handle it.
No, the visa-free rule applies only to Danish passport holders. If you hold a different passport, you need to check that country's specific visa requirements for North Macedonia.
Overstaying can result in a fine (around 30-100 euros depending on how long), a ban from re-entering for up to a year, or both. Border police check exit stamps carefully, so don't risk it.
No, if you're just passing through (e.g., flying from Denmark to Greece via Skopje), you don't need a visa as long as you stay in the airport transit area. But if you leave the airport, you'll need to meet the same visa-free entry requirements.
Yes, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. For work, study, or long-term stays, you must apply for a D visa (long-stay visa) at the North Macedonian embassy in Copenhagen before you travel. This is a different process with additional documents.
The local currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Cards are widely accepted in Skopje and Ohrid, but smaller towns and rural areas are cash-only. ATMs are common in cities. Exchange euros or Danish kroner at banks or exchange offices — avoid street changers.
