Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Slovakia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, your passport must also have been issued within the last 10 years.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Bratislava airport and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend with their address is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Slovakia follows Schengen rules — you need about €56 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a reasonable limit covers this.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the gate — no exceptions.
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance covers all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 60 days in France, you only have 30 days left for Slovakia. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return ticket and first night's accommodation. Print or screenshot everything — you'll need it at passport control.
2
Arrive at a Schengen entry point
You'll land at Bratislava Airport (BTS) or come by land from Austria, Hungary, or Czechia. At the border, join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
The officer will stamp your passport and may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of onward travel. Answer clearly and honestly. The whole process takes 1-2 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, you're free to enter Slovakia. If you're connecting to another Schengen country, you won't go through passport control again within the zone.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, count those days too. Overstaying can lead to fines or a re-entry ban.
No, Danish passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. Just bring your valid passport and proof of onward travel.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days are up. Contact the Slovak embassy in Copenhagen for details.
You will likely be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport before traveling. Even if your passport is still valid, border officers can refuse entry if it's close to expiry.
No, for stays under 90 days, you don't need to register. If you stay longer than 30 days in a private home (not a hotel), your host may need to notify the Foreign Police. Hotels handle this automatically.
Always carry your passport. Police can ask for ID. A copy of your passport (kept separately) helps if it's lost or stolen. Also keep your return ticket and accommodation details handy.
Tourist visa-free entry does not permit working for a Slovak employer. Remote work for a foreign company is generally allowed, but it's a grey area. If you plan to work extensively, consider a digital nomad visa or consult the Slovak embassy.
