Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your Danish passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned departure from El Salvador. Immigration officers at San Salvador Airport check this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from El Salvador
Immigration at Comalapa Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of El Salvador — they check this every time, even for visa-free travelers.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for your entire stay. If staying with friends or family, have their address and phone number written down — immigration officers sometimes ask for this at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask how you plan to fund your trip. Have a bank statement or credit card ready — around $500 USD for a short stay is a safe benchmark. They rarely ask, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to fly.
No visa needed, but have documents ready
While there's no visa application, immigration officers can ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Keep digital copies on your phone to speed things up.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at San Salvador International Airport (SAL)
You'll land at Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are usually two queues: one for Salvadorans and residents, one for foreigners. Join the foreigners line.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and a blank page). The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them ready on your phone or printed. They'll stamp your passport with up to 180 days.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Then head to customs — you may be asked to put your bags through a scanner. Green light means go, red light means a bag check.
4
Exit the arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and ride-shares (like Uber) are available outside. If you need a local SIM, there are kiosks in the arrivals area.
