Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Gambia. Airlines at check-in may ask to see at least one blank page for the entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Gambia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Banjul Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printed booking confirmation or a letter from your host works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Border officials can request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card in your name to show you have means to cover expenses.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine may be required
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (including Senegal, Mali, Guinea, etc.), you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport for a fee or denied entry. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel.
No visa, no fee — but keep your documents ready
Entry is straightforward, but immigration officers can be thorough. Have your return ticket and accommodation details easily accessible on your phone or printed. A little preparation saves time at the counter.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Banjul International Airport (BJL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Gambian citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity, blank page, and may ask how long you plan to stay. Answer clearly and confidently.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry. No fee, no form. Collect your passport and proceed to baggage claim.
4
Exit through customs
After baggage claim, walk through the green channel if you have nothing to declare. Customs officers may randomly check bags. If asked, declare any goods over $500 or commercial items.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Gambia before day 90 and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
Yes, if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including most of West Africa). You may be asked for the yellow card at immigration. If you don't have one, you may be vaccinated at the airport for a fee (around $20-30) or denied entry.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at Banjul airport. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions for short trips.
Yes. The border crossings at Amdallai (near Banjul) and Karang (south) are open. The same visa-free rules apply — just show your passport and onward ticket. Expect a small fee (around 500 CFA) for a vehicle entry permit if driving.
No, departure tax is included in your airline ticket. You do not need to pay anything at the airport when leaving.
Gambian dalasi (GMD) is the local currency. US dollars and euros are widely accepted at hotels and larger shops, but you'll get better rates using dalasi. ATMs are available in Banjul and Serrekunda but can be unreliable. Bring some cash in USD or EUR to exchange.
If you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, no visa is needed. But if you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you must enter visa-free (up to 90 days) — no separate transit visa exists.
